"All for One" or "One for All"?

May 16, 2008 / by dcronin

When you look at today's society what do you see? Do you see people helping others, stopping at crosswalks for pedestrians, or people in their cars with an extreme case of road rage caused from the person in front of them who turned without putting on their blinker? I must say that here in Chico California I see a bit of both. Our world is full of all different types of people. The question is can we get to the point where everyone can respect other's differences?

I think a big part of the picture is the aspect of competition in today's society. People always want to be better then the next person. I for one would be lieing if I said that I don't have a competitive side. I grew up playing sports and it didn't matter if I was playing in a pick-up game down the street or for the championship...I had to win. The competitive side often got the best of me causing anger, and sometimes a cheap shot would be thrown. I feel that this is how society works many times. People have the competitive side in them whether it has to do with sports, how they look, how much many they make and so on.

On a positive note I think we as a society can come together (Yes, I'm coming back to globalization). With the technology available for all of us to be able to communicate with one another with the ease of a button is providing amazing opportunities. In many aspect this huge world is seeming to shrink in size with the interenet and other communication tools. Two years ago my girlfriend went over seas to Spain to study for a semester. By using the internet we were able to not only talk everyday if we wanted to, we could also see each other with cameras. Now I know this is quite basic for all you "techies" out their but I thought it was the coolest thing I had ever done.

When all is said and done I have a very good feeling that we can do this. We can put aside our competitive side and embrace one another. If we can get the idea of "all for one" out of our everyday lives and think "one for all" it isn't going to be that hard at all. As I am getting a bit older it is easier to see what is really important and I feel that community and friends are the most solid foundation you can have.

I really liked your article. You did a very good job of bringing the reader into your points of view and showing what you believe to be going on and what perhaps someday can come to pass. I hope that someday we will get to the "One for all" stage.
