Building a Solid Frame

March 10, 2008 / by dcronin

When I think of a frame I think about a few different things. The frames that make up our lives, frames that complete a great painitng, bones that make up our sturdy frame, and lumber that can be put together in such a way to hold up an entire house. Since age 13 I have been in or around the construction business. Mostly I have framed houses. Starting with the footings and foundation that will support the great amount of weight that a house will bring, and building up is one of the most satisfactory feelings in the world to me. To put such great amount of time into one project to make it perfect for the world to see. The frames that make up or lives however I feel are the most important.

Everyone is brought into this world, whether they like it or not, into some type of atmosphere or frame. Many atmospheres are warm and loving families but all too many are cold and chaotic. I thank God everyday for bringing me into this world with a family who loves me, provides for me, and would do anything for me. My frame is a good one. Many times I have tried to think about what it would be like to have been brought up differently. Maybe an orphan, or just not loved by the family who brought me into this world. There are too many cases like this these days. In the book A Question of Power written by Bessie Head, she brings us into her world, her wild and chaotic frame. Something she refers to as a type of hell.

Bessie was born into a mixed family which was looked down on more than one can imagine. She was taken away from her parents becasue of this reason when she was just a baby. Her adopted family soon left her because she was too dark. The lack of love, compassion, and a sense of meaning leaves her feeling as though she has no frame to support her unfortunate upbringing. All these different things lead Bessie to a feeling of not belonging. "I just don't fit in and belong anywhere and I tend to pride myself on not fitting in or belonging" (Burton 63). The positive thing about what she says here is that I feel that there are quite a few people who share her same feelings. The feeling of not belonging to any group of people will often bring those feeling like outcasts together.

A strong, sturdy, and solid frame is the most important aspect of almost everything in life. Whether it be a picture frame, a structural frame, or the frame that makes us who we are, they must all be solid. Many lives lack this strong sense of identity and are lost forever. Others are able to pride themselves on being different and shine brighter than all.
