It is hard to look at the picture above and not feel small. The Earth is such an enormous and great place. It is our great fortune to have the luxury of occupying it for a relatively short period of time. However as most people know, our short time has been a destructive one. We have been using up the fossil fuels and omitting pollution for far to many years. The Earth is a fragile place and if we don't take care of it, our great grandchildren, grandchildren and maybe even ourselves will not be able to enjoy its' natural beauty.
Something that has come about to remind us of this fact is Earthday. Earthday was thought up by a man named Gaylord Nelson. He first thought of the environment and how we all need to be aware of it in the early 1960's. It wasn't until April 22, 1970 that the official Earthday happened. Earthday promotes demonstrations and education of the public every 22nd of April on ways to better this planet.
Here in Chico California the Chico Green Campus program is putting on the 60 Earth Hour. This is a demonstration for the entire town to participate in. The point is for one whole hour from 8:00-9:00p.m. people will turn their lights off. I think it is a very cool idea. This is just one little thing we can all do tonight. Think of all of the possibilities with the new technology and the strong will of people. Global warming is really starting to become a mainstream issue for everyone. People are starting to do more and more to conserve energy. I believe that as time goes on there will be even more people doing the right thing.
