Globalization

May 9, 2008 / by dcronin

Looking at our world today globalization is inevitable. The use of computers, the internet, and companies going over seas for cheap labor are just a few examples of the movement of globalization. One has to ask themselves if they are for, or against this movement. On the positive side globalization means that we can all come together. On the negative side people in our country are losing jobs due the the out sourcing of juobs to other countries. So ask yourself, is globalization a good thing, or bad thing?

In our english class we watched a few videos on this subject that gave a couple different points of vew. The first had to do with agreeing with globaliztion. The video was based in India and focused mainly on the American jobs that are being given over there. I feel that this is a very positive thing for their country. People who did not have jobs before are now employed. They work during the nights and have all day to do whatever they want to. The jobs are mainly the telemarkerter ones which don't seem to be the most exciting jobs, but someone has to do them. My brother works for an engineering firm in Sacramento California where he goes over construction plans making sure they are sound. When he is done he sends his files over to India and an engineer over there works on the same thing. This type of work seems to be very helpful to both my brother's company and the company in Inida. They get twice as much work done.

The negative side of globalization is that people are losing jobs here in America due the the out sourcing of jobs. Watching the video of the people in India applying for jobs with America Online, Honeywell, and Dell just made me think about all of those jobs that people could have had here. Someone mentioned in class that people should be trying harder to get the same jobs and I do agree with that, but I don't think that you can compete with the low prices over there. Another negative thing that comes from globalization is the use of sweatshops. Our professor made a comment about how we were all probably wearing shirts, shorts, pants, and skirts that were made in these sweatshops. Thinking of this now is almost depressing. I say this because there is no real way to get rid of the sweatshops. People here in America will always try to find a better deal and then best way to supply a better deal is to employ cheap labor.

After all is said and done I still don't know where my mind lies. I feel that globalization is a very positive thing when used for the right reasons. If we can use the ease of the internet and other tools to come together I think globalization will change the face of the Earth in a positive way. However globalization can also change this place for the worse. The out sourcing of jobs and the use of sweatshops are just a couple of things. I hope that we can all come together and realize that we can use the tools we are given for a good reason.
